Sandra was born 13 of January 1997, 12 weeks earlier then expected (28+1, due to 6 of April 1997). I, her mother, had gotten preeclampsia and was intaken in hospital total bedrest since a couple of weeks before her birth. Since both Sandras and my situation got worse - they had to make a c-section to deliver Sandra in hope of giving her better options outside.
Sandra wasn´t very big in this world. A tiny little "Skrutta" about 1 lbs 11 oz and 33 cm tall but she was georgeous and making very well acording her gestational age! She breathed all by her own for a day and a half then she was all too tired so they had to give her respatoryhelp during a week and after that CPAP for another week and after that extra Oxygen in her incubator. Sandra had frequent apneas. Those were times of fear and concerns very tightly followed by our supreme happiness about our beautiful little babygirl. Sandra wanted to survive. She was so angry, a shrew trying to tell the whole world that she didn´t accept this. Very soon she got her nickname by the NICU-staff; "Miss Furious". They told us that that was a positive sign, Sandra´s a struggler, a stubborn one demanding for her life, even if she sometimes used too much of her energy to tell us that. She squeaked as loud as she could and floundered with her her tiny little legs. I had to lay my hand around her arms and legs and just hold easlily trying to calm her down and console her by singing her the same Lullaby I had been singing during the whole pregnancy.
When Sandra was about two weeks old (an eternity for worrying and fearful parents) her situation was enough stabil so she could leave the incubator for a short visit on my breast. The feeling of holding my little baby in my arms for the first time is undescibable, to be able to console her and keep her close to you, skin to skin. Contact, affection, Love
At the age of six weeks and weighting 2 lbs 10 oz she finally got to move out from the incubator to a common babybed. The first days she had extrahelp with at special madrass warming. She could now handle her breathing all by her own. Now she was ready to meet the OutsideWorld - the noise, smells, clothes She was also ment to learn nursing by her self before she could leave the hospital and come home.
The 9 of April she finally could come home with us. She´s now 40 weeks gestational age and weighting 4 lbs 14 oz!
Today (26.04.1998) Sandra is still a tiny little girl (14 lbs 7 oz, 70 cm) but she´s doing fine! She´s crawling around on her belly and a couple of weeks ago she learned to stand up my her own. She´s also a very verbal little girl with temper and strong opinions. She loves music and feeding her parents with fantasyfood. She´s happy, she´s doing fine and she´s the most precious and miraculous gift me and Conny could have.
